Tsavorite Garnet is the beautiful, highly brilliant emerald-green green variety of Grossular Garnet. It is the birthstone for the month of January and the gemstone traditionally gifted on the 25th wedding anniversary. Only found in Kenya and Tanzania, Tsavorite garnet is extremely rare and larger specimens can command a high price. Much rarer than Emerald, it often also presents with fewer inclusions and is more durable. In fact, some Tsavorite Garnet specimens are completely flawless, having no inclusions at all. Long considered a traveler's stone, Tsavorite Garnet is thought to promote successful business, encourage compassion and aid self-confidence. Tsavorite Garnet is said to be a deeply spiritual gem and it is thought that meditating with Tsavorite facilitates communication with higher spiritual realms. A relatively new member of the jewelry market, Tsavorite was first discovered in Tanzania in 1967. Composed of calcium aluminum silicate, Tsavorite gemstones are usually not enhanced and their vibrant green colors are naturally caused by trace amounts of chromium or vanadium in their chemical structure. Though the most highly prized color is a deep emerald green, Tsavorite can range in hue from bright yellowish green to deep bluish or forest green. It is transparent to opaque with vitreous luster and high brilliance. With a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, Tsavorite is durable enough for cutting, setting and wearing. One of the most popular and expensive members of the garnet family, Tsavorite is an enchanting gemstone for earrings, rings, and necklaces.
