Zircon (Natural)

Zircon, not to be confused with cubic zirconia, is the December birthstone and the traditional 49th wedding anniversary gift. Zircon is the oldest known mineral on earth with some samples dating back over 4.4 billion years. Its name derives from the Persian word zargun meaning gold colored. A brilliant, colorful gem with high refraction and fire, Zircon has very high luster, refractive indices, and dispersion giving it lots of brilliance and rainbow flashes of fire. Its colors are widely varied and include brown, orange, red, green, yellow blue and even colorless. Colorless Zircon, Zircon's purest form, resembles the diamond and is highly regarded for its brilliance and flashes of multicolored light called fire. The stone's pronounced double refraction allows the eye to see twice as many facets and twice as much fire. Possessing a range of optical and physical properties, Zircon crystals grow in several different types of rock found in various places throughout the world. However, most Zircon is mined in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. An important stone in Ayurvedic medicine, Zircon is believed to bring wisdom, good luck, joy, wealth and a noble heart. It is also thought to alleviate sleep problems, relieve pain, and protect the muscles, bones, nerves, and organs. Once regarded as a talisman for travelers and known as the stone of virtue, Zircon crystals embody strong healing energy enabling one to be at peace with oneself. A 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, Zircon is a beautiful and sturdy gemstone perfect for rings, earrings, pendants and other jewelry.
